Photographs of this meeting were captured by photographer Jane Barlow, who revealed what mood the Queen was in shortly before her death, announcing news.sky.com.

Press Association photographer Jane Barlow was sent to Balmoral to capture the moment the monarch met new Prime Minister Liz Truss on Tuesday and formally asked her to form a government.

Mr Barlow took several portraits of the Queen while she waited for Mrs Truss.

She described the 96-year-old Queen as “frail” but “in good spirits”. She also said it was an “honour” and a “real privilege” to be photographed.

It’s true, according to the photographer, the Queen looked weaker’ than when she was photographed in the summer.

Photographer Jane Barlow spoke to the Queen about the gloomy weather, but said her mood was quite the opposite: “I got a lot of smiles from her.”

The private meeting, the details of which will not be made public, may have been a little awkward given Mr Truss’s previous calls for the end of the monarchy. Buckingham Palace released a statement saying: “The Queen met the Honorable Liz Truss, the Prime Minister, today (Tuesday) and asked her to form a new administration.

Mrs Truss accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed her hand when she was appointed Prime Minister.” Earlier, the monarch met Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie, during which he officially resigned as Prime Minister. The meeting lasted about 40 minutes, but the details of the meeting will not be made public.
