Ivars Abolinis, the chairman of the National Electronic Media Council of Latvia (NEPLP), announced on social networks that during a cyber attack, the propaganda of the Kremlin entered the television channels broadcast by the Balticom operator.

According to him, the cyber attack against Balticom was carried out on Thursday morning and caused the operator to temporarily lose control over channel rebroadcasting.

During the attack, all television programs broadcast by Balticom were replaced with Russian propaganda content – images of the May 9 parade.

Currently, the iTV service provided by the company is disconnected, the circumstances of the incident are being investigated, I. Abolinis said.

Police said law enforcement agencies have been notified of the incident.

Recently, this is already the second case when, as a result of a cyber attack, the programs of TV channels broadcast in Latvia are replaced with Russian propaganda content. On April 17, songs performed by Russian artists and propaganda clips were broadcast for 20 minutes on the “Tet” platform during a live broadcast on the Ukrainian channel “Freedom”.

According to Tet, such content was sent to the Freedom channel from a satellite.

Ukrainian media published similar reports. Russian hackers are said to have intercepted the signals of StarLightMedia and InterTV and, after interrupting the channels’ broadcasts, showed moments of the parade in Moscow’s Red Square.

This is evidenced by the videos that have been distributed on various channels of the Telegram messaging platform. The information was also confirmed by the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council.

During a military parade in Moscow, the country’s president, Vladimir Putin, took the opportunity to accuse the West of “distorting the truth about the Second World War” and again hinted at the readiness to use strategic nuclear weapons.
