The first strawberries have ripened: what is their price?

This year’s strawberries will soon be harvested en masse. The first harvest has already ripened. Farmers say that this year’s strawberry harvest will be average because there was little sun and the weather was changeable. However, the prices should not differ much from last year.

Sigita Žilinskienė has been nurturing her strawberry farm for almost two decades. The farmer LNK told reporters that people started calling asking for berries a few weeks ago. “Especially in the spring, you want vitamins. Everyone is calling, they want the first vitamins,” said strawberry grower Sigita.

However, strawberries are a little later this year than last year. Last year, they started to be harvested at the end of April.

“The harvest will be average, like every year, only later. Last year later and this year, compared to other years, later. It’s the beginning of May, and the first ones are just starting to ripen, we’re about a week late,” said strawberry grower Nerijus Žilinskas.

Although the berries are grown in greenhouses, the changing weather has an effect. “It looks warm, but we also had snow. Cool weather, cold,” said N. Žilinskas.

According to growers, the taste of strawberries also depends on the weather – the more sun, the sweeter the berry. “The first thing is the breed, the second is the sun. When it’s sunny, the taste is different, when it’s overcast, the taste changes, it doesn’t absorb all the microelements,” explained N. Žilinskas.

Strawberry growers promise not to raise prices. “We will keep our price as it is every year – 8 euros, and it will be the same this year,” the strawberry grower assured.

Strawberries are highly valued because they contain a lot of vitamin C and other useful substances. Farmers recommend eating the first strawberries instead of freezing them or processing them in any other way. “There is a lot of iron. All the simple ones will be frozen, first of all – vitamins to eat yourself”, recommended S. Žilinskienė.

People often grow strawberries themselves, but it is unlikely to be possible to do so in a room. And it is said that people take too much care of strawberries grown in the yard, as a result of which there is no harvest or it is worse. “Most people try to love and overdo it. No need to fertilize. Uses a lot of fertilizer. There is no need to fall in love with strawberries”, said N. Žilinskas.

On a farm in the Kėdainiai district, red-cheeked berries are one of the first to ripen in the country. This farm alone will harvest over a ton of strawberries, and the big harvest should begin in ten days.
