The European Union (EU) announced on Monday that it will formally end the actions it started with regard to Poland over a year ago due to the confusion in the rule of law.

The European Commission (EC) indicates its intention to abandon the procedure initiated under Article 7 of the EU Treaty. The decision was made after the new Polish government, which has started work for a few months, will take steps to correct the situation.

With the election of the current Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the relations between Brussels and Varuva have normalized. However, during the eight-year rule of Law and Justice (PiS), relations between the EU and Poland were the most successful.

Just as part of the reconciliation, Brussels agreed to postpone Poland’s loan of 137 billion. Eur EU l, which was blocked for a long time, and last month received the first money of 6.3 billion. Eur.

There is no termination plan for Article 7 proceedings in EU law. Brussels is doing this for the first time, so it is not entirely clear in what exact order it should take place.

The EC has notified the EU Council and the European Parliament of its intention to end the procedure, and EU affairs ministers will discuss it on May 21. at the planned meeting, the Financial Times confirmed with people familiar with the situation.

The EC started procedures with Poland back in 2017. due to court reforms, which, according to the EC, violated the separation of powers. According to the penal procedure, the parties may eventually be deprived of the right to vote in the EU Council, but this requires the unanimous approval of the remaining parties.

Poland’s plan, which was linked to the Financial Times newspaper, includes steps aimed at undoing the reforms carried out by previous PiS governments.

Last week, Polish Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar said at a press conference that he dreams that the repeal of Article 7 could coincide with the 2004 May 1 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Poland’s accession to the EU.
