On April 27, the country’s medical workers celebrate their professional holiday – Medical Workers’ Day.

* The origins of this day’s commemoration go back MORE THAN a century – to 1918.

* It was officially legalized in 2004 on the initiative of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Lithuania Juoz Olekos.

* The holiday of Lithuanian medical workers is dedicated to the country’s doctors – doctors, nurses and all those who have devoted their lives to the creation of a healthier society.

* April 27th was not chosen by chance – on this day in 1918, the Health Commission was established by the decision of the Lithuanian State Council. At that time, the honor of taking care of the health protection of the people of our country was entrusted to the patriarch of the nation Dr. Jonas Basanavičis, engineer Professor Steponas Kairis and priest Justinus Staugaičius, and Dr. Jurgis Aleknas, who later joined their activities and became the director of the Health Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

*In different countries of the world, the day dedicated to the profession of medical workers is celebrated at different times and based on different history. *In the United States, Doctor’s Day was first celebrated in Georgia in 1932. March 30 On this day, doctors receive postcards, and graves of deceased doctors are visited. Red carnations are considered the symbol of Doctor’s Day in the United States. March 30 in the USA was chosen because on this day the first operation was performed under general anesthesia – in 1842. on this day Crawford W. Long operated on a patient with a tumor in the neck and used ether for anesthesia. The patient later said that he did not feel anything during the operation.

*In India, July 1st is dedicated to doctors. On this day in 1882 the famous Indian physician Bidhan Chandra Roy was born.

*In China, Doctors’ Day is celebrated on March 4 and is dedicated to Canadian doctor Norman Bethune, who treated Chinese soldiers during the war with Japan.
