Ana Starovoitova reached the semi-finals of the European Boxing Championship held in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, but she did not fight the country’s aggressor, Russian boxer Nune Asatriana.

Moreover, in order to express full support for Ukraine, A. Starovoitova (weight category up to 60 kg) will miss the award ceremony, where she would have been awarded the bronze medal of the Old Continent Championships for the second time in her career – the Lithuanian won such an award in 2022.

A. Starovoitova secured the bronze medal in the quarterfinals, when she defeated Sheila Martinez Perez from Spain with a score of 5:0 (29:28, 29:28, 29:28, 30:27, 29:28). In the earlier round of 16, the Lithuanian boxer celebrated a convincing victory over Croatian Dea Bolanc with a score of 5:0 (30:27, 30:27, 29:28, 30:27, 30:27).

“I won my second fight at the European Championship and secured a medal, which is a credit to our whole team. I am extremely satisfied and dedicate this win to my aa Dad, who on April 20 would have celebrated his birthday. I’m proud of myself, but we’re boxers, we can’t cry,” said A. Starovoitova, struggling to control her emotions after the victorious quarterfinal fight.

After defeating S. Martinez Perez in the quarter-finals, A. Starovoitova avenged her defeat in March in the selection for the Paris Olympic Games held in Milan.

2022 World and European boxing champion Gabriela Stonkuta (up to 75 kg) failed to cross the barrier of the quarter-finals of the Old Continent Championships. The Lithuanian lost to the Serbian Nikolina Gajič in a very persistent fight by the decision of the judges 1:4 (27:30, 28:29, 29:28, 28:29, 28:29).

Andriejus Lavrenovas (up to 63.5 kg) reached the round of 16 at the European Boxing Championship after Macedonian Dion Lena refused to fight him in the round of 16. Lithuanian Boxing Federation (LBF) as early as 2023. January 26 made a decision not to fight with the athletes of the aggressor countries. Because of this historic decision to fully support Ukraine, LBF boxers had to miss four championships of the Old Continent and two world championships in 2023.
