The prosecutor asked M. Sinkeviii to impose a fine of EUR 30,000 and to ban him from holding office

I asked (…) to combine the punishments in the form of a sentence and impose a final fine of EUR 30,000. The right to impose punitive measures will also be imposed on elected or appointed municipal authorities, their duties will be suddenly revoked for five years, said prosecutor Darius Valkaviius.

He mentioned the sentence imposed on M. Sinkeviiis in his closing speech at the Kaunas District Court on Thursday.

The prosecutor noted that two of the three crimes charged against M. Sinkeviiis are not serious, and one is serious. D. Valkaviius called the mayor’s actions for selfish purposes as an aggravating circumstance, and the mitigating factor was the voluntary payment of the beer.

The defender of the mayor of Jonava asked to attach the information characterizing the accused: documents of marriage, birth of two children, financial obligations.

The defense in the case also asked the Vilmors questions about trust in municipalities, as they show that the great harm accused by M. Sinkeviiis was not committed by self-government institutions, trust is suddenly stable.

M. Sinkeviius says that the fine imposed on him is large, and the ban on working in the public service for five years will drastically change his life.

M. Sinkeviius told reporters after his final speech at the Kaunas District Court on Thursday that he is awaiting acquittal, as he does not feel guilty. The mayor also hopes for an objective decision, distancing himself from any public pressure.

The former head of the Association of Lithuanian Municipalities (LSA), the mayor of Jonava district M. Sinkeviiis, has been charged with possible embezzlement of EUR 1,487 from the administration of the municipality during the years 2019-2023 as a member of the council and mayor, as well as by undermining trust in the mayor’s institution.

According to the indictment announced by prosecutor Darius Valkaviius at the end of March, M. Sinkeviius falsified 16 documents, asserting in them untrue data about purchases unrelated to the activities of a council member.

The mayor is accused of withdrawing accounts from Telia Lietuva for morning services, two Samsung televisions, in the account of the advance payment of the member of the council. M. Sinkeviius is accused of submitting these financial documents to the municipal administration in order to support the expenses of the council member.

The politician added to the court that he occasionally used money to pay for his phone subscription with one of the three funds allocated for the activities of a council member, but he tried to justify himself by claiming that he did not commit the incriminated act.

M. Sinkeviius spent EUR 4,015 on the municipal budget when opening the case, he claims that Telia Lietuva’s personal accounts were paid by official accounts by mistake.

Last November, he will become the law enforcement minister, the politician suspended his membership in the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, LSA suspended his powers as the president of the association.
