Residents of the Old Town of Kaunas contacted the editorial office, not fed up with drivers who ignore signs and park their cars where it is more convenient for them.

“Santakos Street turns into a parking lot in the evenings, although the signs prohibit any stopping of cars there,” residents complained.

They said that every evening there are the longest lines of cars. Some vehicles are left on the green lawn as well. “They not only violate road traffic rules, but they managed to park cars in the best place in the Old Town absolutely free of charge. “Parkavimas Kaunas” does not operate and does not inspect this location,” people said.

According to residents, the police pass by every night and do not even stop or react to this situation. “Yes, we can take pictures every night, add the data of each car to e-police portal, but is it our job? On the other hand, how much time does it take to reset all the data and dates every time. Maybe the police or municipal initiative should find a way to control this situation? Because it becomes unmanageable, there are evenings when both sides of the street are lined with cars, and what’s more, the more daring start to drive through the prohibited signs towards the park, especially young people with scooters, who drive at high speed among people and children,” residents said.

The braver ones start to drive through the forbidden signs towards the park, especially the youth with scooters, who drive at high speed among people and children.

They lose hope that anything will change. “Police representatives have been spoken to several times, they just throw up their hands. Hundreds of messages filled. Nothing works. So maybe some fences should be built or at least parking should be charged? At least this would be a benefit for the city…” – suggested the locals.

Representatives of the Kaunas police told the portal kauno.diena.lt that the Kaunas city municipality administration solves traffic organization issues, is responsible for ensuring safe traffic conditions on the streets of Kaunas city, implementing traffic safety measures (installing speed bumps, road signs, etc.), and specialized police units carry out traffic supervision, how traffic participants comply with the established traffic order, record and investigate violations of road traffic rules.

“From the beginning of this year until May 6. The officers of the Kaunas District Chief Police Commissariat (hereinafter – Kaunas District VPK) have received 10 reports regarding parking and/or stopping in Kaunas, Santaka Street, where road signs prohibit this. Kaunas district “According to the data of the Road Police Department of the VPK, 94 protocols were drawn up last year (2023) for violations of road signs and road marking requirements in Kaunas, Santakos St., and this year – 6,” the police representatives said.

Unfortunately, there was nothing new to advise. “Residents should report traffic violations committed by drivers using the electronic service system https://www.epolicija.lt or by calling the emergency number 112,” police representatives taught.

We have also sent questions about the situation to Kaunas City Municipality. We have not yet received any answers as to what is planned to be done. We will supplement the publication upon receipt.
