The education program for gifted students in Kaunas is preparing for a new season: applications are being accepted

Currently, three groups of future third-graders are being recruited for the 2024-2025 school year, and vacant places in grades 4-11 are also being filled. Applications with documents are expected until May 31.

The program for highly gifted students implemented by the Kaunas city municipality is intended for students in grades 3-11 with a higher IQ. It consists of active practical and theoretical activities, integrating different scientific directions: mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, sports and arts.

Children get acquainted with optics and mechanics, the subtleties of business creation, oratory, multiplication in Japanese, engage in interactive games that develop social and communication skills. The little “students” even try out the actor’s shoes, the intricacies of drawing, form and tectonics. Lecturers help children prepare for the Olympics, supervise their projects. Twelfth graders are given the opportunity to listen to lectures taught by university students.

Educators are lecturers from Kaunas Technology, Lithuanian Health Sciences, Lithuanian Sports, Mykolas Romeris and Vilnius Universities. The art field is supervised by the National Kaunas Drama and Kaunas State Musical Theaters and the Vilnius Academy of Arts.

“The program for gifted students allows children to get to know different fields of science, the diversity of art and culture better. Classes conducted by university professors and theaters help to develop natural curiosity, the desire to improve, acquire new knowledge and competences, and reveal one’s true potential. Meaningful after-school activities and creativity are inseparable from diverse learning experiences,” Kaunas Deputy Mayor Mantas Jurgutis is convinced.

Currently, three new groups of 15 children are being formed for the 2024-2025 school year. Young people are also accepted for the available places in grades 4-11. Applications from parents, guardians or school communities are accepted until May 31. email by mail [email protected]. Children who want to participate in the program must meet the following requirements: when submitting applications, it is necessary to add an individually completed “Wechsler short scale of intelligence” test (eng. Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, WISC) results. The candidate’s general intelligence quotient cannot be lower than 120 IQ.

Documents, selection criteria, detailed descriptions of educational activities can be found online. Program participants will take 60 academic hours during the academic year. Extracurricular lectures are held 4 times a month.

Certificates of program completion are issued to children who have completed the course. Currently, about 400 students participate in the program for gifted children.
