International Red Cross Day was celebrated on May 8 in Šiauliai Resurrection Square. On that occasion, the Red Cross (RC) flag was ceremoniously raised on the square, a flash mob and a concert took place.

Before noon, citizens of Šiauliai, dressed in the symbols of the Red Cross, gathered in the central Resurrection Square to solemnly celebrate the day of the international organization. Together with them, the organization’s social partners – officials, social workers, business and government representatives – celebrated. A Red Cross tent was located at the edge of the square, where volunteers demonstrated first aid skills and an exit backpack.

The head of the Šiauliai branch of the organization, Aistė Žalevičienė, invited those gathered to participate in the action – to form the symbol of this organization – the red cross. Pupils of Šiauliai “Juventa” pro-gymnasium presented a festive musical program.

Although the activity of the Red Cross Šiauliai branch has been particularly visible and effective recently, the leaders of the Municipality did not appear at the celebration of this organization.

Red Cross Day events run through Friday. On Thursday, there was a media breakfast and discussion, as well as a meeting of supporters of this organization. On Friday, the symbolic flag-carrying of the Red Cross across Lithuania begins. Red Cross crews will depart from 6 large cities, carrying the RK flag through the region, short meetings with mayors and elders are scheduled in all municipalities.

The goal of the Šiauliai crew is to visit the entire Šiauliai region, Telšiai and Mažeiki and hand over the symbol of the Lithuanian Red Cross to the leaders of the municipalities.

The International Service for the Wounded was founded in 1863 to care for the wounded in war. Later, the activities of the service included a wider part of society. This is the beginning of the Red Cross movement.

In 1906, the Red Crescent organization was founded in the Ottoman Empire, which is the analogue of the Red Cross in Muslim countries.

Both the Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations are subordinate to the International Committee, headquartered in Geneva.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations unite more than 400 million people from 175 countries around the world.
