A referendum will be held in May, the question of which is whether Lithuanian citizens who have acquired Lithuanian citizenship by birth will be able to keep it if they acquire the citizenship of another country friendly to Lithuania.

Those who left after 1990 March 11 and after acquiring the citizenship of another state, they lose the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania acquired by birth. This is how Lithuania loses about a thousand inhabitants every year.

May 12 together with the first round of the presidential elections, a referendum will be held on the preservation of the Lithuanian citizenship acquired at birth by acquiring the citizenship of another state friendly to Lithuania.

The referendum will be considered to have taken place if at least half of the country’s citizens agree to it.
