The Facebook account “Weather and climate in Lithuania” shared the photos. It is said that on April 24 before noon, a block of ice fell in a resident’s yard while he was washing his tractor. It is written that a person heard a strange whistling sound, looked at the sky and saw a falling white object and was scared and hid behind the tractor.

According to the author of the post, this piece of ice may have broken off from the plane and fallen to the ground.

“The first logically thought out version that popped into my head is probably correct. The most likely culprit is the plane that landed in Kaunas (from Edinburgh, UK), which, after checking the flight data, was over the indicated area at the specified time (Lithuanian time – UTC+3). It is almost certain that a piece of ice broke away from the plane and fell down,” says the author of the video.

It is indicated that such a phenomenon, which is called “blue ice” (eng. blue ice), can be extremely dangerous.

“It forms when frozen water (or other waste) flows out of the aircraft’s plumbing system. Although such incidents are rare and unheard of in Lithuania, they can cause danger to people and damage to property on the ground. In other countries of the world, there have been cases where roofs of houses, cars, etc. have been damaged by a similar piece of ice. In theory, such a piece of ice could seriously injure or even kill even a person,” the account reads.

It states that such cases of “blue ice” were recorded 27 times in the United States in 1979-2003, while in Lithuania such a phenomenon has not been heard of until now.
