VU Faculty of Philology offers a new parallel study program – translation

A new study program – translation – has added to the list of parallel studies at the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University. The program is intended for learners of English at a level not lower than B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The program is recommended primarily for philologists, but is also open to first-cycle students of all other fields. The scope of the program is 60 credits. The purpose of the program is to provide the basics of translation theory and practice, to develop the translator’s competences, to form a critical and creative approach to translation tasks, the creation of texts, and to carry out translation projects.

The content of the program ensures that the competences necessary for the profession of translator will be developed consistently and continuously. In the first semester, students will get to know the basics of translation theory and practice, which will help them understand and interpret the differences between the translation and the original language, choose and use the appropriate translation procedure; students will also be able to choose English grammar or language and translation courses that would further improve their knowledge of the English language. In the second semester, students will study the history of translation, will be able to further improve English grammar, delve into the legal discourse of the English language and translate legal texts, familiarize themselves with audiovisual translation or try translating fiction. In the third semester, students will edit the translated text, critically evaluate it, generate ideas, and make proposals linguistic problems that have arisen solutions, will also delve into the relationship between translation and culture. In the fourth semester, they will get acquainted with computer translation technologies, various programs, translators, their advantages and disadvantages, and will continue to translate texts in seminars using computer translation tools, text books, and translation processing software. Concurrent studies will end in the fifth semester with the final project of translation project management and concurrent studies, which will allow applying the acquired knowledge: organizing the entire translation process, creating and implementing a translation project. After graduation, graduates will be ready to translate, edit texts in translation service companies, translation offices, publishing houses, etc.
