in 2016 In May, E. Masiulis, who was accused of taking a bribe, promised to reveal the real details of the sensational arrest to journalists.

“Trust me, when the time comes, I will tell you so much that it will certainly be interesting for many to live in Lithuania,” said the chairman of the Liberal Movement at that time.

However, after eight years of litigation and almost four months spent in prison, E. Masiulis is more reserved.

“Just like Anušauskas when he was leaving the ministry, I apparently said it too loudly at that time,” said the politician serving a prison sentence in Kaunas prison in an exclusive interview with Elta.

According to E. Masiulis, these words were prompted by the suspicion that the country’s top officials – President Dalia Grybauskaitė and Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius – are behind everything.

“First of all, I said that in this whole process there are also the first persons – the then heads of state”, said E. Masiulis.

It seems that the politician is convinced even now that D. Grybauskaitė, who led the country at that time, had a significant role in this story.

“There were all kinds of calls from the president to me, requests about the concern. There were many letters and correspondences that were deleted from the file”, E. Masiulis said in Kaunas prison.

“How diligently the law enforcement officers searched for all kinds of letters during the investigation, where any Utena road was mentioned, and how diligently all letters were removed from the “tulip mail” in which the MG Baltic concern was mentioned or Dapkus was named,” he detailed.

E. Masiulis, who was sentenced to six and a half years of imprisonment, also remembered the conversation with the then Prime Minister A. Butkevičius. This, the convicted person claimed, called him and warned him about the publicly expressed criticism even before the law enforcement actions.

“He called in the evening, quite angry and upset, and says: look, you’re criticizing here, but we spoke with the president and she mentioned that she will check your wife’s accounts abroad. Although there were no bills. I understood from that call that he had some information, that the services were already conducting some kind of investigation. All those things came together and apparently that’s why I said those loud words,” said E. Masiulis.

ELTA reminds that last November, in the so-called “MG Baltic” case, the Court of Appeal found former parliamentarian and leader of the Liberal Movement Eligijus Masiulis guilty of bribery, influence trading and illegal enrichment. The politician was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.

The politician is serving his sentence in Kaunas prison, located on Technikos street.

E. Masiulis and his lawyer have appealed the judgment of the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court of Lithuania. The court was also asked to suspend the execution of the indictment, but such an appeal was rejected.

in 2022 in April, the Vilnius District Court acquitted E. Masiulis and other persons involved in the “MG Baltic” case.
