Not only state money, but also businesses from small companies or start-ups to solid companies, in order to make their activities more efficient, are increasingly refusing to use servers in office premises and moving forward, choosing to become part of data centers. If, when choosing the first data centers, less attention was paid to its readiness and the quality of services provided, recently not only its technical capabilities, but also its sustainability have become important.

Important to the market

The services provided by the data center are used by different entities: start-ups, internet portals, factories, pharmaceutical entities, gas stations or financial institutions. For a long time, a few IT cabinets in our premises, where servers or servers are installed, have been called a data center for a long time, but as technologies change, large data centers are becoming popular.

The growth of the data center market is determined by several factors: the development of industries that constantly require a lot of data, which accelerates the widespread continuous deployment of the cloud in organizations around the world. Another important factor is the innovative new Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.

According to the technological market research company TIRIAS Research, due to the data demand of artificial intelligence programs such as ChatGPT, by 2028 the amount of data processed worldwide may increase 50 times.

Many cities currently have restrictions that prevent large new loads from being connected to the grid. Building or development permits are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. If until now data centers were mainly concentrated in big cities such as Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin, where there are many people and a reliable telecommunications infrastructure has been created, there is a tendency for traditional centers to retreat and establish data centers in smaller cities.

it is known, in this case there is a certain difficulty, for example, there may be a lack of a qualified employee. However, interest in other cities, such as Warsaw, Vienna, Vilnius, Istanbul, Nairobi, Lagos and Dubai, which have not yet been known as data center clusters, is expected to grow this year.

Rises quite a bit

When designing and preparing data centers, priority is given to the pursuit of the most advanced rank. As Egidijus Rop, director of the Technology Department of the AB Lithuanian Radio and Television Center (Telecentro), explained, no matter what the size of the data center, it is important to have an uninterrupted, high-quality and efficient supply of electricity, which ensures smooth operation, cooling and security, and in recent years, sustainability. .

The perspective of the last five years is obvious: the climate is changing, the needs of nature are many. Heavy rain, temperature fluctuations, strong winds. In Lithuania, overhead lines still prevail, unlike in Europe, where underground electric cables are mainly used, so a bigger storm, hailstorm or stronger wind has an impact on the stability of the electricity supply. E. Rop commented that the interruptions in the electricity supply, for example, short-term surges, have an impact on the operation of servers and other IT projects, and threaten to damage them.

As the specialist explained, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) help ensure stable electricity supply. The work of modern data centers mainly depends on its efficiency and reliability.

When designing data centers, one of the most important priorities is the most advanced equipment, which works efficiently, helps to save electricity and protects the environment as much as possible. During operation, the UPS ensures efficient load regulation, and the advanced battery management system intelligently manages the battery charging, extends the service life of the batteries and provides adequate energy supply in the event of a main power failure. the construction of the contract provides the possibility to change or install additional power modules, duplicate systems and carry out repairs without interrupting the supply of electricity to the load. These solutions together ensure the safe operation of the event. Uninterruptible power sources also have a mode that ensures the efficiency of the event up to 99 percent. This is necessary because much smaller losses are incurred, and due to more efficient consumption of electricity, nature and customers are saved, commented Edmondas Daukas, an expert for Lithuania from the energy management company Eaton.

When designing and preparing data centers, priority is given to the pursuit of the most advanced rank.

One priority is sustainability

when preparing data centers, no less than an uninterrupted supply of electricity is an important consideration of the contract. when installing paangi rang, outdoor air is used for heating, thus efficient use of electricity. Special cooling and conditioning systems that maintain the required temperature are no longer new in data centers.

The efficiency of data center operations is shown by the energy efficiency coefficient (PUE). It is used to estimate how much electricity a data center consumes compared to how much technological equipment is installed in it. The more crowded the data center is, the more efficiently it works.

during the preparation of data centers, they are increasingly supplied with energy from the sun, and the heat generated by the contractor is used for heating the premises or preparing hot water.

Another issue is that from January 1, 2026, it will be prohibited to manufacture and supply to the market medium-voltage electricity distribution systems up to 24kV, which use SF6 gas, which is harmful to the environment and public health. Data centers consume a lot of energy, so SF6-free events can also help data centers reduce their CO2 footprint.

The needs of consumers are changing, technologies are improving, more and more attention is being paid to saving energy resources, contributing to lower consumption and environmental protection, said E. Rop.

For example, modular data centers operating in Lithuania will be popular in foreign countries as well, because if necessary, the capabilities of one modular center can be expanded by balancing the activities of other data centers. Modular data centers typically consist of standard components that can be added, integrated, or modified by pulling them into an existing data center or connecting them into a modular system.
