Based on the Multivan platform, this latest model offers more space, intelligence and sustainability than its predecessors, while retaining iconic design elements such as the retractable roof. Notably, all models of the new California now come standard with two sliding doors, greatly increasing versatility. A significant addition is the hybrid all-wheel drive system, which turns the van into an electric vehicle that can drive longer distances. Pre-sales of the new California will begin next fall, with first deliveries expected in 2024. at the end

A retractable roof and two sliding doors

The new California features a versatile sunroof with multiple windows covered with mosquito nets. Now you’ll find sliding doors on both sides of the car, making it easy to enter from either side, effortlessly load cargo or use as an open-air terrace. Buyers will also be able to choose two sided awnings that allow for weather adjustment, making the camping experience even more enjoyable. In the interior of the car, separate seats are installed instead of the back bench, which ensures greater flexibility and additional space for larger loads. In addition, the Beach Tour and other higher-end versions feature an innovative camper control unit in the C-pillar that can be controlled on-screen or remotely via smartphone apps. A unique double-click feature allows you to turn off all cabin LED and background lighting simultaneously, a thoughtful touch that provides a level of luxury rarely found even in high-end accommodations.

First California with plug-in hybrid drive and 4Motion system

Buyers of the new California will be able to choose from three different drive systems that are compatible with all equipment packages and connected to an automatic DSG gearbox. Volkswagen commercial vehicles use a 110 kW (150 hp) four-cylinder unit, an efficient turbodiesel direct injection (TDI) engine. No less torque is achieved by the gasoline direct injection engine with a turbocharger (TSI), which develops a power of 150 kW (204 hp). Both TDI and TSI engines rotate the front axle.

A new feature of the California is a plug-in hybrid drive (eHybrid) with an output of 180 kW (245 hp). It is the first model on the Volkswagen Group’s modular MQB platform, which combines a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with the all-wheel drive 4Motion system. The plug-in hybrid drive allows the new California to temporarily turn into an all-electric car for everyday use. The high combined efficiency of the electric and advanced technology petrol (1.5 TSI evo2) engines also allows for a very long range and towing a trailer weighing up to 2,000 kg.

All new California cars are based on the modular MQB platform, and hence the current version of the long-wheelbase Multivan. The California camper van is 5,173 mm long (predecessor – 4,904 mm), width without exterior mirrors reaches 1,941 mm (predecessor – 1,904 mm). The height of the vehicle with the roof down is the same as its predecessor at 1,990 mm, making it once again suitable for driving in multi-storey car parks. The long wheelbase of 3,124 mm ensures that the car has even more space than its predecessor. And the capabilities of the MQB platform allow you to choose from a number of driver assistance systems that ensure additional safety and comfort.

Beach, Coast and Ocean – the perfect camper for every situation

Buyers of the new California will be able to choose from five versions of the car: “Beach”, “Beach Tour”, “Beach Camper” (with a mini kitchen in the back), as well as “Coast” and “Ocean” (with a full kitchen on the driver’s side). These versions are designed to fit as many lifestyle and travel scenarios as possible. Compared to its predecessor, the new models are equipped with separate removable rear seats (weighing 24 kg each) instead of a rear bench. There are practical drawers under all individual seats, as well as in the driver and front passenger seats. Multiple 45W USB-C ports also ensure mobile devices never run out of power.

Control via camper console, smartphone or infotainment system

All functions important to camping are controlled by a control unit on the front passenger side with a 5-inch touch screen. They include information on fresh and waste water levels, interior and background lighting, power status, refrigerator and auxiliary heater. In addition, the new California’s screen can be set to Camping mode, which automatically disables the Coming Home and Leaving Home functions when the car is opened or closed in a campsite. Most of these functions can also be controlled from a smartphone using apps from the California or the car’s infotainment system. The infotainment system can also be used to access a tilt view that allows you to level the parked camper.
