Outdated communication technologies are gradually disappearing in Lithuania – goodbye to the obsolete 3G connection. How should residents prepare for this change? According to Arnold Lukošiaus, Tele2’s Innovation Expert, most people will not feel this change at all, but for some it is worth checking whether they should renew their SIM card. If you don’t do it in time, you may not be able to call.

Why do I need to renew my SIM?

The 3G connection in the Tele2 network will be completely phased out by 2025. the end When the 3G connection shutdown begins, residents are advised to check whether they should upgrade their equipment, for example, to purchase a 4G, 5G supporting mobile phone that also has the VoLTE function. But the most important thing, according to experts, is to make sure that your SIM card is new enough, and if it is strangely old, to replace it with a new one.

“If you don’t remember the last time you changed your SIM card and you don’t know what communication technology you are using, you should visit the nearest salon or contact the operator. This can also be checked in the phone settings or by looking at the connection symbol at the top of the screen. If the card you have supports 3G connection, if you turn it off, you may remain unreachable”, says A. Lukošius.

The expert adds that SIM cards for 2G and 3G were sold until around 2010, then with the advent of new generation communication, the SIM changed as well.

“Technology is constantly developing and moving forward, so those who use a new smartphone and have a newer type of SIM card can experience the full quality of modern communication. And vice versa – those who are still using older model phones may feel a reduced connection, and after disconnecting the old generation technology, they will be left without it at all. If you have relatives who are still using old phones, make sure they update their SIM cards in time. “Tele2 will replace SIM cards supporting the old generation connection free of charge,” advises A. Lukošius.

Shutting down is good for everyone

Only a small part of the population uses 3G voice and Internet data transmission technology. Therefore, the majority of people will not even notice that the 3G connection is turned off.

The operator plans to use 3G frequencies in 4G and 5G networks, so the 4G and 5G connections most used by users will work better.

According to the expert, an updated SIM card can become a great opportunity to update the existing device as well – this would allow you to use all the advantages of new communication technologies.

“The so-called language communication service has also undergone considerable evolution. In the past, calls were only transmitted over 2G or 3G, but 4G technology has taken them to a whole other level – it’s digital voice transmission, so-called “VoLTE”, which transmits your conversations even better, more clearly. Perhaps the most popular feature of this service is the ability to talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time. “VoLTE” needs to be activated in the settings, and the service itself costs customers absolutely nothing,” says A. Lukošius.

To activate the VoLTE service on Android phones, you just need to update their operating system and the service will work automatically. To activate VoLTE manually on iOS smartphones, go to Settings -> Mobile Service -> Mobile Data Options -> Voice and Data and select the activation function here.
