The decision was prompted by disagreements between the African nation and Washington, including disputes over the continued governance of Niger and the choice of partners to cooperate with, Reuters reported, citing American officials.

“I think they asked us to leave because they didn’t want to deal with the issues that were troubling us. We are alarmed by the fact that there are no signs of a shift towards democratic governance. We were also asked questions by their chosen partners of foreign countries, with whom they want to strengthen relations,” the agency quotes the official as saying.

The official indicated that Washington hopes that the Niger government will not delay long and will announce the timetable for the transition to democratic governance after the end of the national dialogue.

He specified that after the military units leave Niger, Washington will look for new democratic partners who will accept American aid and want training and equipment organized by them. He also emphasized that the future of Niger is also being discussed.

Some time ago, it was reported that the new government of Niger terminated the agreement with the United States, according to which American units could be deployed in the African country.
