Activists in Germany tried to break into a Tesla electric car factory near Berlin on Friday during a demonstration against a planned expansion, police said.

So far, the demonstrators have not been able to enter the factory area, a police spokesman told dpa on Friday afternoon, but they managed to overcome the first fences of the area.

A police spokesman described the situation as “dynamic”. So far, he said, one woman has been injured in protests around the factory area, three police officers have also been injured and several people have been arrested.

Police tried to cordon off a wide area around Tesla’s only factory in Europe, closing several nearby highway exits.

As part of the protest march towards the factory, a sit-in protest was also held on a country road near the factory. Masked protesters also set off fireworks and stage a sit-in at the nearby Neuhardenberg airfield.

The latest demonstrations against the Tesla factory in the Berlin suburb of Grünheide began on Wednesday.

Climate activists have been living in treehouses in a nearby forest since late February, protesting plans to clear state-owned forest to expand the plant.

Authorities are taking legal action to remove the treehouses and evict the protesters from the forest.

Environmentalists have also criticized the potential impact of the expanded Tesla factory on the sensitive wetlands that are right next to the factory site.
