Bipartisan members of the US Congress have warned the International Criminal Court (ICC) that Washington will retaliate if it issues arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials.
As reported by “Axios” publication, the draft of the relevant law is already being prepared.
Media reportedthat the ICC may, among other things, initiate the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A Republican insider told Axios that a bill is being drafted that would “respond to any warrants.” No details of the document were provided.
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said he expects the House to pass Sen. Tom Cotton’s bill to sanction ICC officials involved in investigations against the United States and its allies. At the same time, he expressed hope “that it will not be necessary.”
Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson yesterday, April 29, called the alleged ICC arrest warrants “disgraceful” and “illegal.” He called on the US administration to “immediately and unequivocally demand the resignation of the ICC” and “use all available means to prevent this abomination.”
“If Mr. Biden’s administration does not create resistance, the ICC can create and assume unprecedented powers to issue arrest warrants for US political leaders, US diplomats and US military personnel,” Johnson said.
