The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the Houthis attacked the Maltese-flagged Greek merchant vessel MV Cyclades with three anti-ship ballistic missiles and three drones.
“So far, no casualties have been reported and the vessel is continuing its journey,” CENTCOM wrote on social network X (formerly a tweet).
Earlier, the UK Maritime Safety Agency (UKMTO) reported explosions “close” to a merchant ship sailing off the coast of Yemen north-west of Mocha.
“Both the vessel and its crew are reported to be safe,” the Royal Navy added.
Maritime security company Ambrey said the Maltese-flagged container ship was on its way from Djibouti to Jeddah and was likely targeted “due to its stated operator trading with Israel”.
Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the attacks on the Cyclades, the MSC Orion and two other US ships.
The Iran-backed group, which controls Yemen’s capital Sana’a and most of the country’s Red Sea coast, has been carrying out attacks on ships since November last year.
According to her, during her campaign she stands in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza, where the war is currently taking place.
CENTCOM also said that US forces shot down a drone over the Red Sea on Monday that was flying “toward the US ships Philippine Sea and Laboon.”
“This drone posed a direct threat to US, coalition and merchant ships in the region,” she wrote on the X social network, adding that neither US forces nor nearby merchant ships reported injuries or other damage.
In response to the attacks on the ships, the United States and Britain launched their own attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen in January.
