What is a stroke?

A stroke is an acute cerebral blood flow disorder in which brain cells die.

It is estimated that one in six people will experience a stroke in their lifetime. Globally, every 2 seconds someone has a stroke and every 6 seconds someone dies from it.

There are two main types of cerebrovascular disorders:

1. ischemic, when the blood vessel feeding the brain becomes blocked;

2. hemorrhagicwhen a blood vessel supplying the brain in the head ruptures or expands, an aneurysm, and blood spills into or around the brain.

80-90 percent there are cases of ischemic cerebrovascular disorders. If the blood vessel is blocked for a long time, the brain does not receive blood and oxygen, and part of the brain cells (neurons) in the pool of impaired blood flow die – a stroke occurs. If blood flow quickly, within a few minutes, spontaneously recovers, it is said that a transient ischemic attack has occurred.
