A national debate on anti-LGBT constitutional amendments has begun in Georgia

Presenting the amendments to the public, Speaker of the Parliament Shalva Papuašvili stated that on March 25 GM initiated changes and additions to the basic law of the country because “dangerous trends in the field of family values ​​are intensifying in the world” and “there is a danger that these trends may spread in Georgia”.

During the discussion, no one spoke against the amendments to the Constitution. In the next few months, similar discussions will take place in other regions of Georgia. Meetings with the public on the topic of LGBT exclusion will apparently be part of GM’s activities in the run-up to the October 26 event. for parliamentary elections.

At the same time, the ruling party does not have the constitutional majority in the legislature, which is necessary to approve amendments and additions to the constitution.

According to the constitutional amendment project, marriage should be considered only “the union of one genetic man and one genetic woman who have reached the age of 18”. Only spouses or heterosexual married persons are allowed to adopt or foster minors.

In addition, any medical intervention related to changing a person’s gender is prohibited. Only the female or male gender corresponding to the genetic data will be indicated in the documents of the state institutions. Even if a person undergoes an operation abroad and changes their gender, the Georgian documents will indicate the genetic gender.

All organizations operating in Georgia, with the exception of organizations with diplomatic immunity, would be prohibited from imposing restrictions on the use of the terms “mother” and “father” by employees or affiliates.

Meetings, rallies and demonstrations with LGBT propaganda will also be prohibited. And the relevant literature or any works of art will not be freely distributed.
