When milkweeds are already blooming in Lithuania, my beloved Stockholm is just waking up after the freezing winter, timidly melting the remaining snow – in the north, spring starts a good month later. It’s not only nature that’s in trouble, but also Sweden’s economy – the country has gone through perhaps one of the most difficult years in recent decades: the falling value of the krona, recession and economic crisis, ongoing and difficult-to-manage gang wars and uncertainty about NATO have greatly unnerved politicians and locals alike.

Last week, the Riksbanken officially announced that inflation was coming to an end, causing a wave of inhuman relief among the local population. Erik Thedeen, head of the Riksbanken, says that if the situation remains stable, he will cut interest rates several times this year, starting as early as May.

A country not used to being among the laggards had to learn how to save as well as how to deal with a crime wave. But they’re still having a hard time with it, with the high-profile story of a Swedish man being shot in the face in a disreputable neighborhood a couple of weeks ago. The fact that he was killed in front of his twelve-year-old son added to the drama. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer doesn’t seem to have learned how to solve problems during the crisis years, he just continues to speak to journalists with a sigh and endless clichés. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson says curbing crime is the main task of the Riksdagen, the Swedish parliament, in the coming years.

About no-go I’ll write about the zones in Sweden later (I’ll just mention briefly that Eurovisa visitors going to Sweden, don’t go to the Rosengård district in Malmö, if you don’t want a bullet in the forehead), and today we’re analyzing the prices in Stockholm – what went up, what went down, and how it correlates with Lithuanian prices. Since I have just spent a year in Lithuania, I can compare prices directly, I do a small one in the text head to head study.
