Annoying clothing labels: (can’t) be cut out?

Clothing labels – some are around the neck, others are sewn into the side. Sometimes they irritate the skin and cause discomfort. Maybe it is possible to cut them out, but maybe the opposite – it will be bad for you, and if you ever need to clean those clothes, the cleaning company will not know how to do it? The LNK journalist talked about this with Ilona Račkauskiene, the manager of the “Joglė” cleanliness center.

– So can we cut that label that often gets in the way somewhere?

– Anyway, we really do not recommend cutting out labels. Just like a person’s passport, labels are a garment’s passport, according to which we can decide what to do with it – whether to clean or wash, how to wash, how to dry. This is irreplaceable information. We can tell from experience that it is cotton by touch. But cotton is now also processed. And that label is very important to us.

– You are professionals, but in your opinion, do people know how to read signs on labels?

– You know, they didn’t pay before. I think people are savvy now and really pay attention to labels. Because the further you go, the fewer labels there are to cut.

– I have a shirt in my hands. There is one label here and, as you say, it should not be cut out.

– We really wouldn’t recommend it. Because here is all the information on what can be done – hand washing or dry cleaning. Do not bleach. They have a yellowish tint. If we bleach, they may remain white or unevenly white. Do not tumble dry. Many have dryers now. Another sign indicates that drying should be done horizontally. A single dot iron means low temperature ironing. Elsewhere, even the iron is crossed out. It can be compared here.

The entire LNK report is in the video:

– What other signs are there and what is important to pay attention to?

– There used to be an “F” mark, which allows cleaning in all solvents – hydrocarbon solution, etc. The letters “OW” stand for “wet cleaning” wet cleaning. There are not many such signs, but the further you go, the more they appear.

– Do people damage their clothes irreparably by not reading or reading the labels the wrong way?

– Yes, indeed. We have experience from 30 years of practice. This is very relevant for woolen products. Next time it gets mixed up with the laundry or something, just wash it with white clothes at high temperature and the XL sweater becomes an XS.

We can tell from experience that it is cotton by touch. But cotton is now also processed. And that label is very important to us.

– We have a sample, here is a vest and we even have several labels here. Here, as you mentioned, the most diverse signs…

– Yes, let’s start. Washing at a temperature of 30 degrees and underlined, this means a delicate program. Do not whiten, although, of course, no one can whiten black anyway. Do not tumble dry, hang dry. These signs appeared very recently, they were not there before. Ironing also at low temperature. Dry cleaning is crossed out, wet cleaning is also crossed out.

– But the other label still has a lot of information and there is a scissors mark, so these labels can be cut?

– You can cut it off, but not all of it. This is also very important for us in production – to check whether the labeling of the cleaning marks corresponds to the composition. Not often, but sometimes it happens that signs get mixed up, mistakes just creep in. Just human error, put the wrong label or something. If we have a suspicion, we simply check the composition again.

– I read on the Internet that labels and markings may differ depending on the country of origin. True or not?

– I would think that it is not true. I don’t see the logic in that, because the same cleaners are used all over the world, both in America and in Europe. I don’t think changing the signs would be effective. Because in this day and age, when clothes can come from America as well as everywhere else, we should follow the same signs. I didn’t have to hear and come across that there were other signs.

– But the essential information is that it is better not to throw away the clothing labels and endure.

– You will have to accept and leave. Because its cleaning and maintenance depend on it.
