The Vilnius City Municipality donates shrub seedlings to communities to plant yards of apartment buildings. This year, 2,800 saplings of various types of shrubs will be distributed. In turn, the communities commit to caring for and nurturing the plants.

“The interest in this campaign is growing every year. We have already distributed about 15,000 to the people of Vilnius in a few years. to plant bushes in the courtyards of apartment buildings, said Dovilė Ivanauskienė, the landscape architect of “Vilnius City Parks”, who coordinated the action of distributing seedlings. – It is good that the residents feel like they are the owners of their environment and are happy to contribute to its care. And taking care of plants together promotes neighborliness and unites communities.”

Residents of the bush or communities who want to sit near the apartment buildings are invited until April 19 contact your ward and submit a free-form application by e-mail. In it, it is necessary to indicate the amount and type of seedlings from the list provided, a photo of the desired place to be planted and to mark the planting place with dots on the orthophoto, as well as the consent of the neighbors to green the environment. In the request, you should also argue in a few sentences why the residents would like to plant plants in this place.

You should discuss with the neighbors who will take care of the seedlings, water the plants at least for the first year, until they take root and take care of the protective stakes so that the small bushes are not mowed.

8 types of bushes will be distributed to the people of Vilnius (black chokeberry, black elderberry, intermediate forsythia, light hydrangea, common jasmine, gray flexible, common lilac, common snowdrop).

Most of the bushes will grow to a height of 2-3 m, so residents should consider whether the grown bushes will disturb neighbors, utility companies and city services.

After receiving a request from residents, the receiving boroughs will check whether the proposed place can be planted, whether there are certain engineering networks in the territory, the boundaries of the plots, the permissible distances from the buildings will be evaluated and they will answer the questions. After receiving the approval of the ward, from April 26, it will be necessary to come to the place specified by the ward to pick up seedlings.

The bushes will be distributed to the communities, planted in the courtyards of apartment buildings, in common areas. Shrubs are not divided for planting in private areas, even if apartment buildings are located in those areas.

After planting the bushes, to protect them from mowing, it is advisable to fence the greenery with wooden stakes purchased by yourself and to inform the council about the exact place of planting the bushes, so that the plants can be inventoried and included in the greenery maintenance map, according to which various environmental management works are planned.

How to plant seedlings?

It is important to dig a hole twice as big as the seedling’s pot. If the soil is hard or impermeable, the hole should be enlarged. Next steps: mix in compost, re-mix with existing soil, add slow-acting fertilizer according to fertilization instructions. After removing the plant from the pot, you need to check the roots: if they are twisted, dig them up so that they can expand to the sides. Plant the plant so that its neck is level with the surrounding ground. Mulch the undertree in a radius of 50-100 cm around the plant with a layer of mulch 3-5 cm thick – then weeds will not grow and moisture will be retained better.

After the plant is planted, it needs to be watered abundantly and cared for until it recovers. Put trunk protection, drive stakes from the inside so that they protrude at least 70 cm above the ground. This will protect small plants from careless mowing with a trimmer or lawnmower.
