Anna Maria Dyner, an expert at the Polish Institute of International Relations (PISM), commented to PAP Lukashenka’s appearance at the border with Lithuania.

“From March 11 Another complex inspection of the combat readiness of the country’s armed forces is taking place in Belarus. Dictator Alexander Lukashenko took the opportunity to go to the Lithuanian border to “inspect a tank battalion” and send several messages to his neighbors in the Baltic countries and Poland.said the analyst.

Lukashenka, wearing a military uniform and holding a white spitz dog on his lap, did not hide his threats. Among many other statements, he asked the commander of the North West Operational Command about a possible attack in the so-called Suwalki Corridor and stated that “any provocation on the border will be suppressed militarily”.

“The Suvalki Corridor, or rather what we often call the ‘Gardin Gate’, is a really important place, the shortest route from Russian-controlled Belarus to the enclave of the Kaliningrad region. This is the main area of land defense of the Baltic States in a potential conflict between Russia and NATO. Lukashenko knows that this is a topic that will cause public reaction and fear in the West. And I think that’s the main reason why this topic was brought up in the first place,” Dyner said.

At the same time, she emphasized that “not only Russia and Belarus know the importance of the Suwalki corridor”.

“The fact that it is a sensitive area does not mean that it is easy to attack due to geographical reasons (forestry, terrain). In addition, allied forces are being gathered nearby – both in Lithuania and Poland. In addition, both sides know that NATO countries in the region have a very high potential to influence the Kaliningrad region. Therefore, I would rather consider Lukashenka’s statements as threats and influencing public opinion,” the analyst noted.

According to her, in the military and political sense, this “visit” of Lukashenka was a signal to the Baltic countries, Poland and the West that Belarus is supposedly capable of defending itself in this direction.

It could also be a signal to Russia that Belarus has this “western flank,” she noted.

Dyner added that “the Belarusians may be training for some kind of larger Russian operation, which could be a cause for concern.”
