The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lithuania to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Republic of Portugal and the Sultanate of Oman E. Bajarūnas is proposed to be recalled from April 15 of this year.

On Wednesday, the Government will also decide on other ambassadors – May 9. It is proposed to remove Linas Viltrakienė from the position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and from August 1. diplomat Nerijas Alexiejūnas is proposed to be recalled from the position of ambassador to the Republic of France, the Principality of Monaco, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Tunisia.

ELTA reminds that the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Seimas, which met in mid-March, approved the recall of the ambassador to the United Kingdom, E. Bajarūnas, who was embroiled in scandals.

As previously announced, after information about the possible mobbing of E. Bajarūnas appeared in the public space in the autumn of last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency disagreed on whether the ambassador could continue his duties. As a result of this situation, the ministry conducted an inspection, the results of which showed that the ambassador had violated his authority. In October, G. Landsbergis temporarily suspended the functions of E. Bajarūnas. For its part, Daukant Square has repeatedly called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to conduct an independent investigation into the accusations against E. Bajarūnis.

The issue of the diplomat’s work was also in the spotlight in January of this year, when the Supreme Service Ethics Commission (VTEK) found that President Gitanas Nausėda and E. Bajarūnas violated the Law on Public and Private Interests when they visited the musical “Phantom of the Opera”. The commission found that the stay at the theater, paid for by the embassy, was of a private nature.

As with the appointment of diplomats, they are revoked by the President at the request of the Government.
