Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has said it will seek to limit satellite mapping of Ukraine’s territory over fears of intelligence leaks.

“Every day, companies with satellites photograph the territory of Ukraine. These images can be used by the enemy. In times of war, we must reduce risks,” Kateryna Chernokhorenko, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, said in a statement. Ukraine’s defense ministry said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with unnamed satellite companies to limit the distribution of images to prevent Russia from having access to the maps, The Kyiv Independent reported. Ukraine has reached an agreement with a company, which has not been named for security reasons, to provide high-resolution images for security and defense purposes. The unnamed company is the “only satellite company” in the world to provide daily images of the area with a resolution of 3 to 5 meters, Radio Free Europe reported. The EU is also considering sanctions against several Chinese and Hong Kong companies that allegedly provided Russia with satellite images and other technology, Bloomberg previously reported. Several of the companies targeted for sanctions are based outside of Russia, but are linked to individuals and companies in Russia and Belarus.
