How to prepare a garden for planting potatoes – general rules

Potatoes should not be planted anywhere – in order to get a really good harvest, it is important to follow the rules of crop rotation. This means that potatoes should not grow in the same place for 2 years in a row. Also, potatoes should not be planted after peppers, tomatoes and eggplants, but they can be planted after cabbage, carrots, beets and cucumbers.

It is advisable to prepare the garden for planting root crops in autumn – for this, gardeners dig the ground to the depth of the spade tip, remove weeds, spread manure and cover them with sand.

It is important that fresh organic matter can be used only in autumn when preparing the soil, and in spring it is better to take rotted manure. 8-10 kg of fertilizer will be enough for each square meter of the plot. It is also not without reason that the soil should be loosened to a depth of 10-12 cm, and then leveled with a rake.

What fertilizer is better to fertilize when planting potatoes – folk recipes

From generation to generation, gardeners tell their children and grandchildren what to put in the hole when planting potatoes for a good harvest. As a rule, folk methods of fertilization are no worse than “chemistry” from the store – in many cases they are even more effective. Let’s examine some of them.

Rabbit and poultry manure

This is one of the options of what is better to put in the pit when planting potatoes – manure has a beneficial effect on both the soil and the plants. If you use these fertilizers wisely, you can significantly increase the fertility of the land.

  • Fill a 100-200 liter barrel with manure;

  • fill it with water, cover it with a film or a lid;

  • leave for 2 weeks to “ferment”, stir 2-3 times a day;

  • after this period, add 1-2 kg of wood ash (1 kg per 100 liters).

Planting potatoes with this fertilizer will be simple and convenient – you only need to add 1 liter of the mixture to each hole with roots.

If you decide that you want to fertilize potatoes with bird droppings, then you need to dilute 700 g of the main component in 10 liters of warm water, cover the container with a film or a lid and place it in a warm place. Keep the solution for 3 days, then filter and add 1 liter to each well.

To make potato fertilizer from grass, follow the instructions:

  • Collect the cut grass (you can even weeds) along with the roots;

  • put the plants in the barrel so that they make up 23 of its volume;

  • add 30 g of urea;

  • pour water, mix, cover with a lid or film;

  • leave for 2 weeks in a warm and dark place.

The most important thing is to make sure that sunlight does not enter the barrel, otherwise all your work will go to waste. Once the fertilizer is ready, 1 liter of it can be added to each potato hole.
