Top three leaders and the desire for practicality

Paulius Valiukėnas, the head of Longo LT, notes that the country’s residents are not in a hurry to experiment and choose well-known car brands. This is confirmed by the sales data of the last two years. In the list of Lithuanian car choices, Volvo, Opel and Volkswagen do not abandon their positions: “Most drivers associate the dominant time-tested brands with reliability and the fact that the purchased car will last a long time.”

He also adds that Lithuanians in the process of choosing a vehicle are largely influenced by the desire that the purchased car will meet the set standards of practicality and comfort.

“When drivers come to see the car live, they not only inquire about its technical parameters in detail, but also figuratively test the car, assessing its capacity and practicality. These are important aspects that can meet the needs of many drivers,” says the car expert.

Mr. Valiukėnas notes that for the country’s inhabitants, the car has long been more than just a means of getting from point A to point B. It is a “tool” that provides independence, and at the same time a kind of personality expression: “Residents do not shy away from actively planning trips by car, discovering and trying new directions , both with family and individually. In Lithuania and beyond.”

This is also reflected in the choice of car body type. in 2022 Lithuanians mostly chose hatchbacks, station wagons and sedans, at that time in 2023 drivers chose the station wagon body type more often, followed by the SUV and hatchback body types.

“The station wagon body type attracts the attention of buyers due to its functionality and capacity, which are important considering passengers of all ages. The measurements and layout of the luggage compartment do not cause problems when loading baby things or larger luggage when going on a long trip,” says P. Valiukėnas.

Diesel engines dominate

The data of the certified car sales company “Longo LT” also revealed that diesel engines remain the popular choice of drivers. At that time, electric or hybrid cars, although the latter are considered the future, are still few.

“Diesel engines have not abandoned their leading positions for a long time, and such popularity automatically initiates the improvement of the latter engines, improving their efficiency and durability, which leads to lower fuel costs.” Meanwhile, the demand for electric cars is growing every year and more and more of them are being sold, but when looking at the used car market in general, sales of electric cars still occupy a small share, because some drivers treat the latter as a product that is difficult to afford”, says the manager of Longo LT.
