Only her eldest children, Prince Charles and Princess Anne, were able to visit their mother as she lay on her deathbed at Balmoral Castle, the newspaper said, citing unnamed sources. The news of the Queen’s death reached William and Harry while they were still on the road.

William, along with Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, flew from Berkshire to Aberdeen on a private jet. Duchess Kate stayed in London with her children.

Prince Harry, who was visiting his hometown with his wife Meghan and had to attend a charity event in London in the evening, also tried to reach Balmoral in time. However, he arrived here almost an hour and a half after the public was informed of the Queen’s death. Meghan did not go to Balmoral.

According to the BBC’s royal correspondent Nichol Witchell, Meghan may have avoided the trip to Scotland because she feared she would not receive a warm welcome from the rest of the royal family. She allegedly changed her plans only at the last moment.

The Guardian newspaper writes that the new British Prime Minister Liz Truss already at 4:30 p.m. local time was informed of the death of Elizabeth II. This news reached the public only two hours later.
