The BBC article in Russian about how in the last six years already 12 Russian scientists have been arrested, charged with treason and some of them sentenced to long years in hard labor colonies seems to have come as no surprise.
After the famous press conference in 2018, during which V. Putin presented a “weapon that has no analogues in the world”, which is said to be able to maneuver at the speed of a meteorite, overcome all air defense systems and is actually “invincible”, the Russian Federal Security Service (FST) became interested in exactly those experts in the field, who in one way or another contributed to the creation of the supposedly indestructible Avangard, Kinzhal and other hypersonic missiles, that is, those that fly 5 times or more above the speed of sound.
V. Putin’s regime used the rudest and most cynical methods to silence not only critics, but also all those even slightly suspicious who could betray Russia and spill secrets. It’s no secret that law enforcement and the entire legal system in Russia are just a tool for coping – if the Kremlin needs it, suspects appear very quickly, and the necessary “evidence” is presented, and the punishments are brutal.
However, the fact that among those suspects, and then also the accused and convicted, there were not only those scientists who worked directly with the projects of V. Putin’s glorified “super weapons”, but also those who had nothing to do with them, simply worked in related fields, should have caused a lot of questions and fears.
Who will be next? Who will be arrested, when and for what, what kind of case will be created? All this can be just a banal formality. But the real reasons became apparent in the last two years. The war in Ukraine played an important role here.
