Stewart Rhodes, a member of the right-wing Oath Keepers movement, was sentenced Thursday to 18 years in prison for conspiracy and other crimes related to the 2021 siege of the U.S. Capitol.

“You pose a constant threat and danger to the world,” Judge Amit Mehta said after Mr Rhodes claimed he was a political prisoner.

In November, S. Rhodes was found guilty of the rare charge of conspiracy to carry out anti-government activities.

Prosecutors asked 57-year-old S. Rhodes, a former soldier who studied law at Yale University, to be sentenced to 25 years in prison.

During the nearly two-week trial in Washington, prosecutors alleged that Mr. Rhodes and other members of the Oath Keepers planned an armed insurrection and intended to approach the United States government by force.

Members of the Oath Keepers were accused of stockpiling weapons at a hotel near Washington and joining the crowd that stormed the Capitol to deny Joe Biden’s election victory.

Prosecutors will show jurors text messages from S. Rhodes and his followers with calls to action if outgoing President Donald Trump loses the election and does nothing.

Mr. Rhodes did not enter the Capitol himself, but led his followers as a field general, prosecutors said.

At that time, Arkansas resident Richard Barnett, who was photographed with his legs crossed on the desk of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was sentenced to five and a half years on Tuesday.

A jury in Washington earlier found Mr. Barnett guilty of two counts of obstructing Congress from confirming the results of an election, trespassing into the Capitol and disorderly conduct by using a dangerous weapon with an electric eye device disguised as a baton.
