At the FIA press conference in Monaco, Lewis Hamilton was asked to comment on the rumors about his possible move to the Ferrari team. In response, the seven-time world champion said that he has almost finalized his new contract with Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton: “It’s only natural that when discussing a new contract there is always all kinds of speculation in the negotiation process. At the end of the day, until you hear from me, treat everything else as rumours.
There are certainly people in the F-1 press center who spread the rumours. They may have been doing this because they were bored after canceling a stage at Imola last weekend.
Behind the scenes, my management team works closely with Toto Wolff. We have almost agreed on all the details of the contract. I used to negotiate by myself and it was a very stressful time for me.
We remain a champion team, but we simply don’t have the fastest car yet. In the last two years, we have not always made the right decisions, but we are working on correcting the situation, directing all our energy to it.”
Hamilton also commented on the updates the team brought to Monaco: “We will have an updated car this weekend. The team worked very hard to prepare this news. We already decided after Bahrain what needed to be done.
I was a little disappointed when I found out about the cancellation of the Emilia-Romagna GP, because I wanted to try the upgrades there. Monaco is not the best track to evaluate the news, but we hope to learn more about the car’s progress next week in Barcelona.”
