Berlin will also allow allies with powerful German-made tanks to send them to Ukraine, German media reported.

The reports come after The Wall Street Journal published an article quoting US officials as saying that Washington is now looking to send large numbers of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine, possibly to be announced this week.

Citing unnamed government sources, the NTV news channel reported that Germany would transfer a company of Leopard 2 A6 tanks.

In the German armed forces, a company consists of 14 tanks.

Separately, Spiegel Online said the tanks would be supplied from Bundeswehr stocks, while other shipments could later be assembled from industrial stocks.

A spokesman for Chancellor Olaf Scholz, contacted by AFP, declined to comment on the reports.

Earlier on Tuesday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he was urging allies to begin training Ukrainian forces in the use of tanks.

He said a decision on the Leopards’ launch had not yet been made, but promised that it would be announced soon.

Ukraine and several of its allies have been urging Germany for weeks to allow the delivery of the Leopards, but no such decision was made at a US-led meeting of Kyiv allies in Germany last week.

In recent weeks, Chancellor O. Scholz has repeatedly emphasized that Germany will not send tanks alone.

A senior US lawmaker told AFP last week that Mr Scholz had told US congressmen that Germany would supply Ukraine with battle tanks if America also sent tanks.
