The prosecutor of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office submitted to the court with a criminal order the case regarding the attempted smuggling of high-value cultural-archaeological objects. Officials found archaeological finds worth about 59,000 euros in the shipments prepared for shipment.

According to the case data, in December 2020, at the airport, after the Customs officers checked the accused M. Š. prepared shipments, cultural objects of high value were found in them. 4 ancient pieces of metal armor – shin guards and two more shipments with ancient green metal military helmets were prepared for shipment to foreign countries. In all three shipments, M. Š. did not indicate his data, and wrote the recipient’s data as non-existent, because he knew that he did not have the necessary permit issued by the Cultural Heritage for such shipments.

Another helmet is a Montefortino type, an archaeological-historical find, as well as an object of great cultural value.

During the research, the aim was to find out the origin, cultural significance and value of these items. The Kaunas District Prosecutor, who led the investigation, examined not only the conclusions of the specialist obtained by the Department of Cultural Heritage, but also interviewed three witnesses in foreign countries, the possible recipients of these shipments, who were in Italy, France and the United Kingdom, through the means of international cooperation.

The obtained conclusions state that II-I a. BC ancient parts of metal armor – shin guards are an archaeological find of great cultural value, a unique example that reflects the history of protective armor during the Roman Republic. The value of these armor parts – shin guards – 26,000 euros.

One of the helmets is of the Halkidiki type, also an archaeological find, an object of great cultural value, belonging to the Hellenistic era.

This is a unique example reflecting the history of defensive armor of the late Greek period. The value of this helmet is 18,000 euros.

Another helmet is a Montefortino type, an archaeological-historical find, as well as an object of great cultural value, a unique example that reflects the history of protective armor during the Roman Republic. Its value is 15,000 euros.

M. Š. charged with attempted smuggling (Criminal Code, Article 22, d. 1, Article 199, d. 3). The prosecutor of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office, who led the pre-trial investigation, requests that the defendant be fined 150 MGL (5,000 euros) and that the seized antiquities be handed over to the National Museum of Lithuania.

The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the officers of the Kaunas Division of the Customs Criminal Service, the investigation was led by the prosecutor of the Third Criminal Prosecution Division of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office. The case was transferred to the Kaunas District Court.
