It seems that this has never happened before: as many as ten minors were injured in traffic accidents in the country on Thursday. One of them in Kaunas was blocked by an electric scooter driving on the sidewalk while waiting at a public transport stop.
The circumstances of some other traffic accidents in which a total of five boys aged 10-13 and the same number of girls aged 9-16 were injured that day are also telling.
It seems that in two cases the children were injured on the way to school, as the traffic incidents involving them were registered around eight in the morning.
At that time, at the intersection of Taika and Pirties streets in Palanga, an 11-year-old boy riding a bicycle, as he should, was obstructed by an unidentified car that left the scene. The boy was injured when he fell.
At the same time, an 11-year-old girl crossing the pedestrian crossing was hit in Šiauliai, on Gegužių street. The vehicle traveling in the first lane stopped to let her pass, and the Opel Vivaro truck (up to 3.5 tons) traveling in the second lane, driven by a 26-year-old man, hit it. In the summary of the Lithuanian Road Police Service, it is emphasized that this accident happened when the road surface was wet. The 11-year-old girl was taken from the scene to the hospital.
Another traffic accident involving minors, which opens the Police Department’s summary of the country’s most outstanding criminal events of the past day, was recorded as schoolchildren were returning from school. As many as seven people were injured during it, five of them (or half of all minors injured in the country that day) were children.
Such were the head-on collisions between a Mercedes-Benz Sprint school bus and a tractor pulling a attached agricultural implement, which took place around 2:15 p.m. Consequences in the Pakruoj district, Peleniškės village.
The Lithuanian Road Police Service tends to emphasize in its summaries that this collision took place on a bend in the gravel road. Seven people riding the school bus were injured in it: 10 and 12-year-old boys, 12, 13 and 16-year-old girls, an 18-year-old woman and a 56-year-old driver.
Two of the mentioned minor girls are being treated in the hospital after this incident. The other victims were released for outpatient treatment after providing the necessary medical assistance.
Despite this, as stated in the summary of the Police Department, the pre-trial investigation into this incident has not yet been started – only material has been collected to clarify its circumstances.
The already mentioned Thursday’s traffic accident in Kaunas, in which a child was also injured, seems to have also happened when he was returning from school. Around 12:40 an 18-year-old girl riding an electric scooter on the sidewalk in Utena Street obstructed a 10-year-old boy standing at a public transport stop.
According to the representative of the Kaunas police, according to preliminary data, the accident happened when the scooter driver was trying to go around people waiting for public transport at the mentioned stop. And the 10-year-old was hindered because he took a step backwards at that time. After the collision with him, the driver of the scooter hit the fence. The 10-year-old was taken from the scene to a medical institution for examination. However, it seems that he was not seriously injured, because only administrative proceedings were initiated due to this incident according to the article of the Code of Administrative Misdemeanors, which provides for liability for a violation of road traffic rules that resulted in minor health impairment or property damage.
