The person who registered to participate in this year’s presidential elections changed his mind overnight, the Central Election Commission (CEC) reported.

According to the CEC, Kęstutis Macevičius was registered as an independent political campaign participant in the presidential election on Thursday evening. However, on Friday morning, the person announced that he had changed his mind.

“On Friday morning, K. Macevičius informed the Central Election Commission that he no longer wanted to run for office and sent a request to cancel his registration,” CEC spokeswoman Indrė Ramanavičienė said in a statement.

“When a candidate for candidacy expresses the desire not to participate in the elections, his status as an independent political campaign participant is destroyed,” explained I. Ramanavičienė.

According to the CEC, K. Macevičius already tried to register to participate in the elections for the post of the country’s leader in December of last year, but that time he did not submit all the documents and was therefore not registered.

ELTA reminds that currently 5 political parties have announced their proposed or supported candidacies in the presidential elections. The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats will be represented in the elections by Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, the candidate of the Lithuanian Peasants’ Green Union will be the member of the Seimas, former Minister of Health Aurelijus Veryga, the Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos” nominated the former Deputy Secretary General of NATO Giedrim Jeglinskas, and the Freedom Party – the former member of the Constitutional Court the candidacy of chairman Dainius Žalim. The Christian Union expressed its support for the candidacy of lawyer Ignos Vēgėlės on Thursday.

4 self-nominated candidates are also known: Gitanas Nausėda, who is seeking a second term, doctor Eduardas Vaitkus, former army commander Valdas Tutkus, and Zenon Andrulėnas, who previously ran for LRT general director.

The presidential election will be held on May 12 this year.
