On the first day of the Davis Cup meeting between Lithuania and Sakartvelas, the teams shared a victory each. In the debut match, the second racket of the Lithuanian team, Vilius Gaubas (ATP-366), lost 3:6 6:1 5:7 to the leader of Sakartvelo, Saba Purtseladze (ATP-450).
The balance in the duel was restored by Ričardas Berankis (ATP-248), who beat Zuras Tkemaladze (ATP-721) 6:2 6:2.
“I think I controlled the meeting with enough confidence. In the first set, there were longer games because I didn’t know anything about my opponent’s game. I had to analyze it just by being on the card. The second set was already easier, although otherwise Z. Tkemaladze’s game left quite a good impression on me. I want to thank the viewers very much for their support. It’s really a great pleasure to play in such an atmosphere”, said R. Berankis after the meeting.
V. Gaubas said that this is perhaps his most painful defeat in the Davis Cup. “It’s not particularly nice to have experienced it in front of my audience, with such support. I was particularly unlucky in the middle of the third set. It looked like I could break my opponent, but instead I lost the initiative. Later, it was possible to return to the match, but it cost a lot of strength. However, at the very end, the opponent played a bit more successfully and won.”
Tomorrow at noon, the doubles match between Ed Butwill (ATP-638) and Tad Babel and Alexander Metreveli (ATP-882) and Alexander Bakshi (ATP-904) will start. R. Berankis and S. Purtseladze and V. Gaubas and Z. Tkemaladze will play later.
True, the participants of all these meetings can still be changed by the decision of the national team captains.
