The municipal council promises to decide on this next week.

The draft decision stipulates that from March 1 of this year, all passengers traveling on regular local (city and suburban) transportation routes of the Joniškis district municipality operated by the company “Joniškios autobusu parkas” will be transported free of charge.

Some routes will be charged

You will need to pay only when traveling on the route “Joniškis-Meškuičiai-Šiauliai” and it will be partially charged when traveling on the route “Joniškis-Žagarė-Meškuičiai-Šiauliai”.

“It is expected that free passenger transportation in the municipality of Joniškis district will encourage residents to choose public transport services, social problems of those who do not have the opportunity to use transport services will be partially solved, the use of cars will decrease, and air pollution will be reduced”, states the explanatory note of the project.

The costs incurred by “Joniškis bus park” will be compensated by the municipality.

In Lithuania, passengers can already travel for free by public transport in Biržai, Šilalė, Kretinga, Tauragė, Plungė districts and other municipalities.
