Already this weekend, on May 26-28, Kaunas invites you to celebrate the city’s 615th birthday in the open air. The confluence of Nemunas and Neris will be the epicenter of the events. A cozy family space, light installations, video projections and performances by musicians and world-famous DJs will await you in the newly revived park. Medieval knight tournaments, fairs and other entertainment will be held nearby.
“Kaunas is 615 years old! There is a large, honorable history in this number. Greetings to all Kaunas! The city will celebrate its birthday loud and long – for three whole days. It will be truly memorable. It is important to remember that this is a holiday for all of us – everyone creates it. The city has taken care of the program of events, and the audience just needs to be in a good mood and be able to see and participate as much as possible with high emotions,” says Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.
The city welcomes the three-day birthday marathon with the slogan “Kaunas is the future of our past”. The program includes a medieval town, ancient crafts and other fairs, knights’ tournaments, highlights of the past year – the European capital of culture.
The main space of the celebration will be located in Santaka Park and around it. Popular Lithuanian and foreign performers, groups and DJs will perform on the big music stage. The festive mood will be created by GJan, Jessica Shy, Linas Adomaitis with the Kaunas City Big Band, the groups “Garbanots”, “Kamaniu šilelis”, “Baltasis kiras” and others.
They will be joined by the project “Someone Like You – The ADELE Songbook” coming from Great Britain, as well as the positivity-radiating trio from neighboring Latvia “3Live Project”.
Kaunas electronic music luminary “Ten Walls” will perform as a duet with Swedish soloist Jonatan Bäckelie at his hometown festival.
The climax of the party will be the Norwegian Martin Tungevaag, who is currently in the top 100 DJs in the world, and the Swedish artist AronChupa, who has collected more than a billion views on the YouTube platform with the hit “I’m an Albatraoz”.
Together with the rhythms of music, a cozy space for families has been planned on the banks of the Santaka Park Nemunas – areas for picnics, games, dances, and children’s areas. On the side of the Kaunas Castle near Nerimi, the sauna area will stretch to P. Vileišis bridge.
A traditional fair with food products, authentic and traditional handicrafts will be held in the Old Town. “Kiemų festa” in Laisvė aleja will become an integral part of the birthday. On the embankment of the old pier at the so-called Daugirda amphitheater, an impressive show of dancing musical fountains will be waiting.
Events that have become traditional will create even more action: Putvinskis street day and swimming in Nemunu and Nerimi “Let’s celebrate the river”. Jet ski racers who will start their 20th jubilee season with the “Kaunas Jet 2023” competition will make waves and splash water at the Kaunas passenger pier at Vilijampole.
The citizens of Kaunas will be able to get acquainted with the latest trends of the holiday season and the directions of the routes at the “Tourism street” located at the intersection of Vilniaus and M. Valančius streets.
