At least 20 people were killed and many others injured when a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in northern Pakistan on a mountainous highway linking the country to China, officials said on Friday.
At least 20 people were killed and many others injured when a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in northern Pakistan on a mountainous highway linking the country to China, officials said on Friday.
The bus, carrying about 40 passengers, was traveling to the mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan region from the city of Rawalpindi, near the capital Islamabad, a local official said. Nearly 20 people were injured in the accident and are being treated in hospitals, a rescue official said.
Rescuers, backed by army helicopters, pulled victims out of the difficult terrain, said Dilbar Khan, the region’s chief minister.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but accidents in the region are usually caused by speeding on slippery roads after weeks of heavy rains and mudslides.
According to the government, poorly maintained vehicles and traffic that do not meet safety standards are responsible for many accidents in Pakistan every year.
