Germany on Friday blamed Moscow-funded hackers for a cyber attack on members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and warned of consequences.

Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s foreign minister, indicated that a federal government investigation into last year’s attack on the SPD had recently been completed.

today we can unambiguously say that we can attribute the cyber attack to the APT28 group, which is led by the Russian military food service, the minister said at a press conference in Australia, where he is currently visiting.

In other words, this was a state-sponsored Russian cyber attack on Germany, which is completely intolerable and unacceptable and will have consequences, she added.

The group APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, is accused of carrying out numerous cyber attacks in various parts of the world.

Last year, the European Union’s computer security response service CERTEU drew attention to German media reports about 2023. to carry out a cyber attack on SPD leaders and claim that data may have been leaked.

According to the service, there are specific indications that Russia is involved in the attack.

The German minister made the announcement after a meeting with Penny Wong, Australia’s minister of foreign affairs, in Adelaide, in southern Australia.

Mr. Wong pointed out that Australia is concerned about the cyber activities mentioned by her German counterpart.

Australia stands in solidarity with Germany and appeals to countries that behave in accordance with the norms of responsible state behavior in cyberspace, according to Mr. Wong.

We have previously joined the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand in classifying malicious cyber activity as APT28, she added.
