The second 3×3 basketball selection tournament has started in Japan, where national teams seek a ticket to the Olympics. This time, the Lithuanian national team is also aiming for the dream goal.
Lithuanians are fighting for the only ticket in the eight-team tournament held in Ucunomija.
The national team competes in Group A with the Netherlands, Puerto Rico and Brazil, and the top two teams will advance to the semi-finals. France, Mongolia, Japan and Egypt will compete in Group B. Lithuanians have the highest ranking in the tournament, so they are slight favorites to win the Olympic ticket.
Represents the national team Evaldas Džiaugys, Aurelijs Pukelis, Darius Tarvydas and Šarūnas Vingelis.
The first match against the Brazilians started without results, A. Pukelis moved the Lithuanians by finishing the breakthrough with a layup – 4:2. The opponents used up the foul limit in just three minutes. E.Dziaugys consolidated the lead with a long shot – 7:5. A. Pukelis scored twice in a row from a distance, D. Tarvydas also scored once (18:13). The match was closed by Š.Vingelis with a breakthrough right before the siren – 21:14.

12:55 p.m. the team will face the Netherlands, who started with a 21-16 victory over Puerto Rico. They beat the Brazilian basketball players 21:19.
In the second meeting of the group, Lithuanian (1/1) basketball players 18:21 lost to the Netherlands (2/0).
After half time, the score was still equal – 10:10. Then the Lithuanians took the lead – 14:10. The Dutch basketball players responded with the same and with 2 minutes left the result became equal – 14:14. During the value of two points, the Dutch briefly led (16:15), but D.Tarvydas equalized the result – 16:16. The Netherlands managed to pull ahead again – 20:16 at the start of the last minute. A. Pukelis hit a long shot (18:20), defending Lithuanians had a chance to tie the score, but made a mistake and the opponents scored the last point with 10 seconds left – 21:18.

The Netherlands: Worthy de Jong 11, Dimeo van der Horst 4, Jan Driessen and Arvin Slagter 3 each.

Even if this selection did not take place, the Lithuanians would still have a backup option – an additional selection will be held in Debrecen on May 16-19, where 16 national teams will compete for the three remaining tickets. Only eight of the world’s best national teams will compete in the Olympics, Serbia, defending champion Latvia, China and the United States of America (USA) have secured their places.
