With the keys – from childhood

The workshop where we met Mr. Paškevičius is still new. He moved there a few weeks ago. Until then, work was boiling in father Alfonso’s workshop nearby.

“Dad and I worked together until the New Year. I used to always be his right hand and lately he was mine. But my father’s health has deteriorated, so now I work alone. Then I moved to new premises. I wanted to move there earlier, because my father’s workshop is small, probably 4 square meters. meters in size, but he did not agree. He worked there for 30 years, his own grandsons after building, hanging the pictures, it is a sacred place for him, that’s why we didn’t move.

But here it is more spacious, better. Of course, now that I’ve moved, my father is a little sad, he keeps saying: my workshop, my workshop…” – P. Paškevičius began to tell after entering his estate.

Father Alfonsas worked in this job for about 30 years and often took his son with him everywhere, so Pauli had to touch key production at a very young age.

“My father used to give me 1 litas for making one simple key. It was half the price, can you imagine? And we drove everywhere together, I watched him lock the door. I participated everywhere”, the interviewer shared his memories.

So Paul learned this craft little by little from his father and has been doing it for about 13 years. Now he makes simple and car keys, repairs them and locks, and goes to other cities when he receives an emergency call – he needs to quickly unlock the doors of houses or cars.

Emergency calls are rarely fun

During so many years of work, I had to go through many adventures. However, as the interviewee admitted, they are rarely cheerful, because sometimes people simply lose their keys and then need to unlock the door of their house or car, but there are also sadder cases – people lie passed out at home or “they end up killing themselves”.

“There is one incident that I remember the most because it involves a baby. I remember three or four years ago I was driving from Anykščiai because I unlocked the door there, and there were about 20 km left to Molėtai when I received a call. They told me that I needed to unlock the car in Molėtai as soon as possible, but I couldn’t so quickly, because I was still far away.

I asked what happened and they told me that people got out of the car, went around to get the 2 month old baby out of the back, but all the doors were locked and the car keys were inside. Then it was summer, a weekend, 30 degrees, it’s really hot in the car. Imagine how much the sun heats up a black car.
