In Vilnius, a drunk driver damaged two neighbors’ cars: what happened next surprised even the officers

The awakened man admitted his guilt and explained to the officers that he “didn’t hit the yard on his way back from the store.”

According to the file, Ernest P. was driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated, when he was found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.91.

The incident took place in 2023. on December 26, around 9:28 p.m., in Vilnius, on Kregždžių street, near an apartment building.

He just wanted to smoke

When questioned in court, Ernest P. admitted his guilt completely and showed that during the Christmas holidays, in 2023 on December 24, he visited his parents.

The next day, together with his children, he returned to Vilnius, and on the same day, in the evening, he decided to visit his friend who lives near the village of Galgii.

He was preparing to celebrate Christmas with his friends. in 2024 on December 26, in the afternoon, he went home. On the way, he stopped at a forest not far from his place of residence, where he listened to music and drank the beer he had in the car.

After some time, he left the car and returned home on foot. He also drank beer at home and fell asleep. When he woke up from his sleep, he wanted to smoke, but the cigarettes were in the trunk of the car left by the forest.

Returning to the car, he decided to drive home. The distance to the house was not great. When entering the yard to park his car, due to the slippery surface of the road, he was unable to stop in time and hit the neighbor’s VW Beetle, which shifted from the impact and hit another car.

Very excited about it. When he stopped in the yard, he thought about how to inform his neighbors about the traffic accident, but he fell asleep. After a while, the officer woke him up and asked where he damaged the front of the car.

Out of confusion and misunderstanding, he showed that the car already had certain defects before he bought it, but after getting out of the car and looking around, he realized what defects the officer was talking about.

Immediately afterwards, the officers in the police car checked him for intoxication. The officers did not offer the defendant a second sobriety test. Even if he forgets this circumstance, he does not understand why he could have refused to blow a second time.

He behaved politely, did not retaliate, followed all the officers’ instructions. The accused also stated that he had drunk 5-6 beers on the day of the incident. The day before the event, together with his friends, he consumed drinks of different strengths.

Not wanting his parents to go through what happened, he decided not to tell them anything about the incident. You want to get rid of all bad habits (alcohol drinks and smoking) and start doing sports.

He regrets that his actions harmed his neighbors, but he is glad that people were not physically harmed. The Dodge Nitro car was purchased from an acquaintance living in Spain.

He declared the car in his own name, but did not register it because he planned to sell it. He recently founded his own company to repair cars. In addition, he received a job offer from the vocational training institution where he previously graduated, so in the future, if he is released from criminal responsibility, he is preparing to work as a teacher.

He currently lives in Vilnius, in the part of the house belonging to his parents. Maintains close ties not only with his sister’s family, but also with his brother’s family. Communicates and gets along with neighbors.

The material damage suffered by the neighbors was compensated by insurance. He willingly agreed to pay extra for car damage and help repair it.

Found sleeping in the car

The official report of the police officers indicates that in 2023 on December 26, at around 9:28 p.m., while working as a crew, he received a report that the complainant’s BMW car was damaged by another vehicle in Vilnius, in the courtyard.

The reporter indicated that the accident was caused by a red car parked nearby, in which a possibly intoxicated neighbor was sleeping.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw the informant, who explained that neighbors had noticed several damaged cars in the yard.

After inspecting the scene, the officers noticed a red Dodge car in which the accused was sleeping. The man was clearly drunk because he smelled strongly of alcohol.

The man did not resist the demands of the officers and handed over the car keys. When asked about the incident and the damage to the car, the man replied that the car already had minor defects before it was purchased.

Later, after inspecting the scene and the damage to the cars, he admitted that he was driving the car and caused the traffic accident. He said he “missed the yard” on his way back from the store and hit another vehicle.

After checking the man’s intoxication, the officers found a blood alcohol level of 1.91. The man refused the second sobriety test.

Court decision

The court decided to release Ernest P. from criminal liability on bail, transferring him to the responsibility of his sister, setting a bail term of 1 year without bail.

The man is prohibited from using the right to drive road vehicles for 2 years. A Dodge Nitro car was confiscated from him.

The judgment may be appealed to the Vilnius District Court within twenty days from the date of its announcement, by submitting the appeal through the Vilnius City District Court.
