SEB bankas warns of an extremely brazen new telephone fraud scheme, which is used to defraud people not only of online banking data, but also of bank cards. The bank urges residents to be vigilant and not to disclose their personal data to anyone, not to hand over bank cards and not to install insecure apps on their devices.

“We have noticed that residents are receiving massive calls from fraudsters pretending to be representatives of Google, Meta, SEB and other banks or the police. Most often, customers receive a call in Russian, during which it is stated that the customer’s account, card or account is not secure, that someone is allegedly trying to hack into it and use the data. The person is then connected to alleged police officers or bank employees who ask for internet bank login details or the card’s PIN code. There are more and more cases when fraudsters, convincing residents that it is necessary to change the card for security reasons, defraud the cards themselves along with their PIN codes. The latter are transmitted to fraudsters live or via couriers, specifying the real address of the bank as the destination. This creates the impression that the card is supposedly being sent to the bank branch”, warns Daiva Uosytė, director of the Prevention Department of SEB bank.

D. Uosytė adds that the cards received from the residents directly or via couriers are also used for a broader fraud scheme. Fraudsters transfer money defrauded from other victims to the accounts of these cards, and then quickly cash it out.

According to the Director of SEB Bank’s Prevention Department, in some cases, customers reveal their internet bank login details without even realizing it. During the call, people are asked to download apps that allow screen sharing. In addition, in order to reduce the suspicions that may arise from customers, fraudsters say that in this case they will not have to dictate any data, only perform certain actions. In this case, residents should be careful, as any suspicious program or browser plug-ins pose a direct risk to the security of personal data.

“SEB Bank never asks to transfer payment cards through intermediaries or other persons. In addition, if the consultant who called you does not speak Lithuanian, this should cause suspicion. In this case, we recommend ending the conversation immediately and contacting your bank through the official contacts listed on the bank’s website,” advises D. Uosytė.

SEB bank reminds customers that during telephone conversations, their login data, such as internet bank identification code, Smart-ID, Mobile-ID or PIN1 and PIN2 codes of SEB apps, as well as payment card information and PIN, must not be disclosed. code. In addition, residents should be vigilant and never enter this data into an SMS, Facebook message or email. link received by mail.
